Little Miss Eticote

Little Miss Eticote
In her white petticoat
And her red nose
The longer she stands
The shorter she grows

A candle.

As a little girl I was taught this riddle as a song. My father told me that he had learned it in school. Since he was born in 1917 I’m guessing he probably learned it in 1923 or ’24. This is how I was taught it:

Little Miss Etticote
In her white pettcoat
Shorter and shorter she grows.
O how she suffers
While we, with the snuffers
Are snipping her little, red nose.

Carol, I remember it, but it was a song as I remember, and to this day I can still sing it, but wish I could remember all the words to it.
