## Highest Number Without the Letter N?

What is the highest regular counting number that is spelled without the use of the letter “N”? (No numbers like Googolplex or Graham’s number)

Eighty-eight. From then on, they all have the letter “N”.

A googleplex doesn’t have an “n” in it

You’re right. I’ve updated it to say normal counting number.

Bummer. We just lost out on a cruise for 6 at a pub quiz tonight because of this question, which has two errors in it.

Firstly, Googleplex is the name of the corporate headquarters of Google Inc, it is not a number. A googolplex, on the other hand, is 10 to the power of one googol; or 10 to the power of 10 to the power of 100.

Secondly, the given answer, 88, is not a regular number (see Wikipedia) and is therefore the wrong answer. I see Dan has corrected the question to be “a normal counting number” rather than “a regular counting number” which would then make 88 the correct answer.

As a matter of interest, “Google” was an accidental misspelling of “googol” by the founders of Google Inc. Also, most Google servers are named under the domain “1e100.com”. The “e” in scientific or programming notation means “times 10 to the power of”, so 1e100 means 1 times 10 to the power of 100 = googol.

By the way, I winged the answer “googol” to this question in the quiz. However, that is probably also wrong since it is unlikely to be a regular number either. I’ll have to write a program in perl or python to figure it out, since I don’t have a calculator that can deal with numbers that are 101 digits long. :-(

Assuming googol is wrong, the correct answer to the question as originally posed is 80, since 80 is in fact the highest regular counting number without an “n” in its spelling.

@Mauler You’re right, I fixed the spelling of Googolplex, thanks for catching that.

It must be 88 if we exclude numbers like googol and googolplex.

@mauler

I know this is 8 years later…but are you telling me 88 isn’t a regular number and using wikipedia a source for it; Sure, it isn’t divisive by 60, but it’s a real number and I don’t understand why it isn’t accepted as the answer.

88 is the answer.
