Which Are True and Which Are False?

A. When a car is driven forwards the wheels rotate counter-clockwise.
B. If a clock is put forward 1 1/4 hours the minute hand moves through 450°
C. When a clock reads 4.10 the acute angle between the hands is exactly 60°

A. False – The near-side wheels rotate counter-clockwise, but the far-side wheels rotate clockwise.
B. True
C. False – The acute angle is a little more than 60° because by the time the minute hand reaches 10, the hour hand will have moved slightly past the 4.

Mixed Animals for $100

At the market you can buy a cow for $10, a pig for $1 and 8 hens for $1. How many animals would you need to buy to get 100 mixed animals for exactly $100?

7 cows, 21 pigs and 72 hens. The trick to this is finding the combination of cows and hens with the same cost and quantity since pigs are already equal. The magic combination is 7 cows and 72 hens, giving you 79 animals that cost $79 ($70 + $9). Then you just add 21 pigs to get to 100 animals.

Think of Person Who Lives in Disguise

First think of a person who lives in disguise, who deals in secrets and tells naught but lies.
Next tell me what’s the last to mend, the middle of middle and the end of end.
Finally give me the sound often heard during the search for a hard to find word.
Now string them together and answer me this, which creature are you unwilling to kiss?

A spider. The person in disguise is a spy, the letter d is the last letter in mend, in the middle of middle and the last letter of end. When someone can’t think of a word they often say, “Err”. And lastly, I don’t know about you, but I’m not keen to kiss a spider.

This one is a duplicate of Deals In Secrets Tells Nothing But Lies but I’m keeping it to avoid broken links.

A Circled of Joined Hands

You dance in a circle of joined hands,
And though they spin away I can always see your face,
In the world, no matter where I am,
One look at you and I know my place.

What am I?

A clock.

An analogue clock is a circle, and the hands of a clock are joined at the middle.
The hands can point away from you, but the clock face is always visible.
No matter where you are in the world, you can probably find a clock.
“One look at you and I know my place…in time!”

Thanks to Helena for creating this and sending it in.

What’s So Funny Ethel?

Merle was checking out at the grocery store. Ethel, a friendly cashier, said the total was $63.59. He gave her a $100 bill and she began laughing as she counted out his change. Then she gave him a high five and Merle left the store chuckling.

What was so funny?

The amount of change was $36.41, which meant Ethel handed Merle one of everything in her drawer:

$20 bill
$10 bill
$5 bill
$1 bill
A quarter
A dime
A nickel
A cent
———
$36.41

Good ol’ Ethel.

Where do the Numbers Belong?

Three numbers, 16, 14 and 38, need to be assigned to one of the rows of numbers below. Where do the numbers belong?

A06893
B1527211019
C71471117

Hint: This is not a mathematical problem. The numerical values are irrelevant.

The rows indicate the shape of the number. Row A is rounded, B is mixed and C is linear. Thus, 16 belongs in row B, 14 in row C and 38 in row A.
