I Look Like What I Represent

I am one of very few, perhaps the only one, to look like what I represent. What am I?

The word ‘bed’, which looks like an actual bed. The ‘b’ is the headboard, the ‘e’ is the mattress and the ‘d’ is the foot board.

If you know of another word that looks like the object it represents, add it in the comments.

No Head On Which A Hat To Place

I always run but never walk,
I sometimes sing but cannot talk,
No head on which a hat to place,
You always look me in the face.

What am I?

A clock. It runs all the time, it “sings” for hourly chimes, cuckoos or alarms, it doesn’t have a head (but does have hands) and you look a clock in the face to tell the time.

Dark Halloween Night

On a dark, stormy Halloween night, four kids named Luke, John, Sarah and Bob walk into a haunted house during a blackout. Only one can escape. They take a staircase to the second floor, a trapdoor on the left, then go up the ladder to the right, followed by a 28-foot slide to the basement through the mouth of a Giant Panda. In one corner of the murky cellar is a chainsaw, a dagger, a rope with a noose and an electric chair. Written on the wall in blood are the words, “Only one will survive – choose your death!” Bob takes the rope, Sarah picks up the dagger, John chooses the chainsaw and Luke uses the chair.

Who survives?

Luke, because there’s no power (it’s during a blackout).

Cut But Never Eaten

What is put on a table and cut but never eaten?

A deck of cards.  You put the cards on the table to play, and you cut the cards to mix them up, but you don’t eat them. Flowers is another possible answer.

What Digit Does Each Letter Represent?

This is what you know:

1. Each letter represents a different digit from 1 to 9
2. The total of each row is 17.
3. (B × B) + B + F = A
4. C × F = EF (a 2-digit number, not their product)

A B C
D E F

What digit does each letter represent?

A = 7
B = 1
C = 9

D = 8
E = 4
F = 5

A + B + C = 17
D + E + F = 17
B2 + B + F = A
C × F = EF

To begin with, B has to be a 1 or 2 or else A wouldn’t be a single digit. Plug in B = 2, gives you 6 + F = A, meaning F and A can only be (1,7) or (3,9). To get 17, C would have to be 8 or 6, but those values don’t work for C × F = EF. So B must be 1.

2 + F = A means F and A can be (2,4), (3,5), (4,6), (5,7), (6,8) or (7,9). To get 17 on the top row, the only option that leaves C as a single digit is F = 5 and A = 7.

C × F = EF
9 × 5 = 45, so E = 4 and D = 8 to make the second row equal to 17.

You’re Halfway There

You’re standing 11 feet away from a doorway and with each step you move halfway to the doorway. How many steps will it take for you to get to the doorway?

Technically, the answer is infinity. If you keep going halfway, you’ll never actually make it to the doorway.

But in practice, after 10 steps you’ll be 1/8th of an inch to the doorway and anyone behind you would say to stop being a baby and take a real step through the doorway already.

All Things Devours

This thing all things devours,
Birds, beasts, trees, and flowers.
Gnaws iron bites steel,
Grinds hard stones to meal,
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down

Time. Iron, steel, stone and virtually any substance will be worn down given enough time.

(From J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit)
