All Things Devours
This thing all things devours,
Birds, beasts, trees, and flowers.
Gnaws iron bites steel,
Grinds hard stones to meal,
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down
Time. Iron, steel, stone and virtually any substance will be worn down given enough time.
(From J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit)

We had this riddle in school I am in year 5, my teacher gives us a riddle each day with early morning work. At first I thought it was fire because fire can destroy stone into powdery meal, when I found out that it was really time I felt really stupid for not knowing it the first time. If I actually used my BRAIN then I would have got it correct!

I’m surprised that nobody has mentioned the fact this is from The Hobbit.

I believe that water would also be possible. There is not a substance that hasn’t utilized water in its raw forming state or during its processing. Kings can be slain by water in many ways. Both iron and steel deminish and fade under waters influence, carves paths through mountains and water conditions by flooding or tainted water ruin towns. I get that it my be a stretch but could fit too in my eyes.
