Seconds in a Year

How many seconds are there in a year?

Hint: You don’t need a calculator

24. If you said 12 for January 2nd, February 2nd, etc that’s close, but you forgot about January 22nd, February 22nd and so on. If you are a math whiz and didn’t need a calculator to perform 60 x 60 x 24 x 365, then 31,536,000 works too. If you used 365.25 to account for leap year, then you are a human calculator, but even that’s not entirely accurate due to the leap second. And even accounting for that, it’s only an approximation that there are 365.2422 days in a year.

To figure it out you would do 365days×24h×60min.×60 seconds soooo it would be 31,536,000

I tend to work things out in my head by multiplying by an easier number that will get me close, then working from there.

I started from the number of seconds in a day, 86,400, then multiplied that in stages to get to 375 days, and so on.
86,400 x 5 = 432,000
432,000 x 5 = 2,160,000
2,160,000 x 5 = 10,800,000
10,800,000 x 3 = 32,400,000
32,400,000 – 864,000 = 31,536,000
31,536,000 + 21,600 = 31,557,600.

What about accounting for a leap year? :)

That’s where the 21,600 at the end comes in.
If you meant the .242 value for the overrun, then subtract (0.008 x 86,400), or (8 x 86.4).
31,557,600 – 691.2 = 31,556,908.8
If you meant the days in an actual leap year, then (31,536,000 + 86,400) = 31,622,400.

The correct answer is 12. Anyone who said 24 is an idiot.

what percent of a year is 26 seconds? Obviously I am NOT so great with math :/
I know there is 31,556,926 seconds in a year so would I than divide 31,556,926*12= ??
Or is that the wrong way to set up the problem?? Thanks to anyone with insight!!
