Oct 31 = Dec 25

How can Oct 31 and Dec 25 be the same?

Because Oct 31 represents the octal (base 8) number 31, which, when converted to decimal, is 25. Dec 25 is short for Decimal 25, thus the two are equal.

Ahhhh – a great nerdy math/programmer joke. The answer is that what appears as dates is really referring to numerical systems. Oct = octal, which is a base 8 numbering system and Dec = decimal, which is base 10.

It looks like this:

Octal numeration: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13 ,14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24,25, 26, 27, 30, 31

Decimal numeration: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25

Funny thing is, both dates are the same too. It is like this:
1) alarm rings
2) wake up, brush teeth
3) stare at computer screen for hours on end
4) toilet break, food, etc
5) stare at computer screen for a few more hours
6) shower
7) bed.
* some intimate details have been left out not to make it too boring or long.

It’s the same number in different number systems. Computers use base 2, 8, 16. We use base 10 since we have 10 fingers. So in the octal (base 8) number system 31 means 3 x 8^1 + 1×8^0 which is 25 in the base 10 (DEC). Life would be easier if we have fingers that were powers of 2.
